The
MCAI places a high priority on worker safety and health.
As illustration of this, a full-time safety director was
hired in January 2000.
Since 1995, the MCAI, in conjunction with the L.U. 33 JATC,
has offered safety training at U.A. Local 33 in Des Moines.
To date, over 850 Local 33 members and employers have attended
training through this program. In October 2001, the safety
training program was expanded to U.A. Local 125 in Cedar
Rapids.
With the addition of a full-time safety director our safety
services have expanded. Not only is safety training available
to members, but phone and on-site safety consultation is
also available. Even more beneficial to our members is that
annual MCAI membership dues cover most safety services costs.
With no additional out-of-pocket costs and a full-time safety
professional on staff, we believe our safety services to
be some of the best around. Make good use of your membership
dollars. The next time you have a safety-related question,
or need some assistance with your safety program, give Scot
a call.
Consultation
Whether
you have a quick question that can be answered over the
phone, or have an issue that requires on-site assistance,
MCAI Safety Services can help. We strive to stay on top
of compliance issues, and have excellent resources available
for assistance when necessary. If you need help setting
up your safety and health program, or if you just need
someone to review your existing program, let us know.
We can also accompany management on safety inspections
of jobsites, fabrication facilities, and even your office
building. In the event you become involved in an OSHA
inspection/citation, we can help guide you through their
response process (i.e. Informal Conference).
Training
Do
you ever run into jobs that require workers to be trained
on specific OSHA standards before they can begin work?
Depending on the topic, and the time frame you have available
to complete the training, we may be able to assist you
in meeting these requirements. Some common topics that
we provide training for are:
Confined
Spaces
Lockout/Tagout
Excavation Safety
Ladders & Stairways
Hazard
Communication
Fall Protection
Scaffold User Safety
OSHA 10-hour Certification
Scheduled
safety training is also available at Locals 33 and 125.
For dates, view our online calendar.
Resources
As
a member of the MCAI, you will receive, upon request,
a copy of our Safety & Health Manual. In addition
to this, we have a video library that members can tap
into as necessary. We also have "All-in-One"
workplace/jobsite compliance posters available at reduced
cost to members.

State-Wide
Safety Committee
Quickly
becoming one of our most active committees, the MCAI State-Wide
Safety Committee is made up of various member safety directors/managers
and representatives from across the state. The committee
meets to discuss various safety issues affecting the mechanical
contracting industry in Iowa. The statewide safety committee
is made up of two subcommittees - the Central Iowa Chapter
safety committee and the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Chapter
safety committee. The two subcommittees focus on safety
issues that pertain to their work areas.
