Critical Leadership Skills for Project Leaders – Project Foremen and Project Managers

Strong leadership skills are synonymous with successful project management by the project manager and the foreman. The success of project managers and project foremen largely depends on their leadership ability in creating and managing highly effective and productive project teams on challenging projects.

There is no such thing as a great project manager or great foreman who is a weak leader. To have successful projects and a successful career, project managers and project foremen must develop critical leadership skills.

This session provides an understanding of these critical leadership skills. It will include, but is not limited to:

• What is great leadership?
• The relationship between leadership and followership
• How to gain follower commitment vs follower compliance
• The subtle differences between leadership and management
• What is Servant Leadership and how is it important to a project management?
• What is emotional intelligence?

• The relationship between coaching, mentoring, teaching, and learning
• Making the emotional connection with teams and team leaders
• The relationship between leadership and motivation
• Creating an atmosphere of trust
• Understand the importance of clear expectations, equity, and consistency.
• The powerful connection between listening, learning, and leadership
• Leadership ability and its relationship to personal effectiveness and accomplishment

About Speaker:  John Koontz, MCAA Director of Project Management Education – A former tenured associate professor in Purdue University’s Department of Building Construction Management, John has been teaching since 1992. Before that, he spent 15 years in the employment of MCAA contractors in roles including senior project manager, project manager, project engineer, and estimator.
